How to Travel with Jewelry: Packing and Care Tips for Summer Trips

Late summer is peak travel season on Long Island, with beach weekends, family reunions, and last vacations before school starts. Jewelry doesn't always travel as well as we do, and a little planning goes a long way toward keeping favorite pieces safe, clean, and undamaged. Here's what our team at Maddaloni Jewelers recommends before your next trip.

What Travel Does to Jewelry

Chlorine can damage and discolor gold alloys and pit pearls over time, while salt water and sand are abrasive to softer stones and can loosen prong settings. Sunscreen and lotion leave a film that dulls the sparkle in diamonds and gemstones. Tangled chains and scratched stones are usually a packing problem rather than bad luck, the result of loose jewelry rattling around a suitcase pocket or toiletry bag. And the two most common ways jewelry is lost while traveling are simple: theft and misplacement, not anything more complicated.

How to Pack and Protect Your Jewelry

Use a dedicated travel jewelry case with individual compartments, or fasten necklaces closed before packing them (threading a chain through a straw works in a pinch) to keep them from knotting in transit. Wrap rings and earrings separately in soft pouches so metal doesn't scratch metal. Not every piece needs to make the trip, save fragile heirlooms and anything irreplaceable for occasions closer to home, and pack versatile, durable jewelry instead. Remove rings, bracelets, and necklaces before swimming, sunbathing, or applying sunscreen, and store them somewhere dry until you're ready to wear them again. Hotel room safes are worth using even for pieces that don't feel especially valuable, and if you're flying, keep jewelry in your carry-on rather than checked luggage.

If you're unsure whether a piece can handle heat, humidity, sand, or salt water, ask us before you go. We've been helping Long Island families care for their jewelry for over 45 years, and we're happy to advise on what's travel-friendly, check clasps and settings before a big trip, and give everything a professional cleaning once you're home. It's the same personal, no-pressure guidance whether you're asking about a $100 pair of studs or a family heirloom.
