Since diamonds tend to settle back into the Kimberlite rocks, miners generally focus on tracing the Kimberlite deposits back to their origin in the pipes. Once the source is found, the pipes are utilized to conduct tests on their potential for exploration and the possibility of diamonds existing there.The fact that diamonds are difficult to source is an obvious. Mining

Once the exploration is done, mining takes place to extract the minerals. Diamond mining is a continuous process that keeps on going 24/7 once it has begun.

Open Pit mining

This method of mining is used more frequently as it dwells in mere surface excavation to extract the rocks from which diamonds can be obtained.

Underground mining

This method of extraction is utilized when the pipes to be excavated are economically less feasible and are situated deep below the Earth’s surface.

Marine mining

The kind of mining that is conducted to extract minerals along the banks of a river, shoreline or an ocean bed. 

Alluvial mining

Alluvial deposits are formed when minerals are eroded from their source, and then transported by water to a new locale.

When diamonds have to be extracted from these deposits, this method of mining is utilized.

After mining, the rough diamond ore goes through blasting, crushing, and advanced x-ray techniques to extract the rough diamond from it.

Sorting 

In this step, the producers inspect the rough stone and classify the diamonds into thousands of categories according to their size, shape, quality, or color for sales.


Each year, millions of carats of rough diamonds are produced in the market, out of which only 20-25% are considered gem quality, while the rest are used for industrial purposes.

Manufacturing

The diamonds that are fit for commercial use (gem quality diamonds) then undergo cutting and polishing, which is known as the diamond manufacturing process.

Although a small portion of the manufacturing process is computerized, most of it is performed manually, which requires great skill and technical experience 

What is involved to Manufacture Diamonds?

• Planning – The initial planning regarding how the rough diamonds will be cut, which technology will be best suited for cutting them and who will cut it is thought out in this step.

• Cleaving – The process wherein the rough diamonds are cut into multiple pieces with a precision laser cutting machine.

• Polishing – In this step, the diamonds are given their final shape and polished repeatedly to give them an intense sparkle.

• Inspecting –  In this process, an expert reviews the cut of the polished diamonds using magnifying glasses after which they get graded in different labs and receive their official certification of quality.

Once the diamonds are cut and polished, they are ready to be set into any finished piece of jewelry.
